The Commercial Potential of the Production of Community: Mediatization as a Business Model

Project leader: Prof. Dr. Michaela Pfadenhauer

Project assistants: Tilo Grenz, Annika Leichner

The research project is located at the interface among commercialization, community-building and mediatization: In two contrasting case studies the establishing of a brand community (community-building) on the one hand and, on the other hand, the expansion of a community-like internet platform for fans of series to a commercial enterprise or an undertaking in general (commercialization) is examined under the conditions of the most recent media change (mediatization). Mediatization is to be understood both as a driving and enabling factor for commercialization as well as for communitisation ("Vergemeinschaftung"). Hence, in the two studies the commercial potential of the production of community of the post-traditional kind, which ‘responds’ to individualization, will be assessed, based on mediatization as a business model. In respect of the methodical programme, in this research project recourse is made to an inclusion of a netnographic approach in life-world analytical ethnography. A consequent advancement of the hitherto theoretical concept of post-traditional communitisation through a qualitative technical.
